St. Francis Xavier Shrine

Old Bohemia

          Warwick, MD

In 1704, the Jesuits founded St. Francis of Xavier as the center for new mission activity east of the Chesapeake Bay. The original boundaries of it's mission activity included the present Diocese of Wilmington and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

The Old Bohemia Historical Society restored and now maintains the old church as a historic shrine for the Diocese of Wilmington, DE and they have done a magnificent job! Although we weren't able to get inside, we took pictures through the windows and also of the church and grounds.

From Middletown, MD take U.S. 301 south to 282 east to Warwick, MD. Look for the sign and Historical marker. Don't give up too soon, it's a couple of miles to the Shrine
