| The Mission of San Carlos was
founded on August 24, 1771 by Padre Junipero Serra. Padre Serra also
founded 9 other Missions.
In 1985, Pope John Paul II declared Junipero Serra venerable and in 1988 he was beatified in recognition of his heroic virtues. In 1960 Pope John XXIII raised the historical shrine Carmel Mission to the satus of minor basilca.
